Vitamin B12

The amount of B12 in your blood.

MMA (related test)

Methylmalonic acid is sometimes used to confirm a deficiency. It is a separate test.

Who may need this test

  • Tiredness, pins and needles, numbness, weakness, a sore tongue, memory problems or low mood
  • Strict vegetarians and vegans, and older people
  • Stomach or bowel conditions or surgery, and long-term use of metformin or acid-reducing medicines
  • Blood tests that suggest a type of anaemia

A low result may be confirmed with a further test. See a doctor if you have symptoms, because early diagnosis matters and some problems can be permanent.
