The Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) test measures the level of folate in your blood. Folate is a B vitamin found in green leafy vegetables, pulses, fruits and fortified foods, and the body needs it to make healthy red blood cells and new DNA as cells grow and divide. A shortage of folate can cause a type of anaemia in which red blood cells become large and fewer in number, leading to tiredness and weakness. Doctors order this test, usually together with a Vitamin B12 test, to find the cause of anaemia, to check nutrition in people with poor diet, digestive problems or heavy alcohol use, and before or during pregnancy, when folate is especially important for the baby's healthy development.
