About this test

A doctor usually orders TSH first, and may add T4, T3 and thyroid antibodies depending on your symptoms.

What the test measures

TSH

Thyroid-stimulating hormone. Made by the pituitary gland, it signals the thyroid to make T4 and T3. Often the first test a doctor orders.

T4

Thyroxine, the main hormone the thyroid releases. Free T4 is the unbound part that can reach your body's tissues.

T3

Triiodothyronine, the more active thyroid hormone. Your body makes it from T4.

Included in this test

  • T3 (Triiodothyronine)
  • T4 (Thyroxine)
  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Who may need this test

  • Tiredness, feeling cold, weight gain, constipation, dry skin or hair loss (can point to an underactive thyroid)
  • Nervousness, trouble sleeping, feeling hot, a fast heartbeat, trembling or unplanned weight loss (can point to an overactive thyroid)
  • Irregular or heavy periods
  • A swelling at the front of the neck, or a thyroid lump
  • You take thyroid medicine and your doctor wants to check the dose
  • You are planning a pregnancy and your doctor has advised the test

Doctors read thyroid tests together with your symptoms and other results. No single result diagnoses a condition on its own. See a doctor if you have symptoms, because they can have other causes.

How to prepare

  • Fasting is usually not needed for thyroid hormone tests on their own. It applies only if other tests on the same sample need it.
  • TSH changes through the day, so an early-morning sample is best.
  • Biotin (vitamin B7) is found in many hair, skin and nail supplements and multivitamins, and it can interfere with thyroid tests. Tell us if you take it, and follow our advice on when to stop.
  • If you take levothyroxine, ask your doctor or our lab whether to take your tablet before or after the blood draw.
  • Tell us about every medicine you take. Do not stop any medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

What can affect your result

  • Biotin supplements
  • Some medicines, such as steroids, amiodarone, lithium, and iodine-containing contrast used for scans
  • Pregnancy and oestrogen-containing contraceptive pills, which can raise total T4
  • A serious illness, which can temporarily lower TSH
  • Age: TSH tends to run higher in people over 80, often without a thyroid problem

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for a thyroid profile?

Usually not for thyroid tests on their own, unless other tests on the same sample need fasting. Your booking shows the exact instruction for your test.

Can biotin or my hair-and-nail vitamin change my thyroid report?

Yes, biotin can interfere with many thyroid tests. Tell us if you take it and follow our advice on when to stop.

What time of day is best for a thyroid test?

Early morning, because TSH varies through the day.

Why is TSH usually the first test?

TSH shows whether your pituitary gland is asking the thyroid to work more or less. Your doctor reads it with T4 and T3, your symptoms and your history.

Should I take my thyroid tablet before the test?

Ask your doctor or our lab. The right timing can depend on the test.

Can I book a thyroid test at home in Raipur?

Yes. A HealthMark phlebotomist collects the sample at your address anywhere we serve in Raipur. You can also visit our lab in Shankar Nagar.
