About this test

Doctors use it to screen for and diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, and to monitor people who already have them. It is not used to diagnose type 1 or gestational diabetes.

What the test measures

HbA1c

The percentage of haemoglobin coated with glucose. The more sugar in your blood over time, the higher the percentage.

Who may need this test

  • Increased thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss, blurred vision or slow-healing sores
  • Prediabetes, overweight, a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, or PCOS
  • You have diabetes and your doctor is monitoring your control. Cleveland Clinic says this is usually done two or more times a year.

A first high result does not always mean diabetes. Your doctor may repeat the HbA1c or add another test, such as fasting glucose. See a doctor if you have symptoms or are at higher risk.

How to prepare

  • You do not need to fast for the HbA1c itself. Your booking shows the exact instruction if other tests on the same sample need fasting.
  • Tell us about every medicine you take. Do not stop any medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant.

What can affect your result

  • Anaemia, thalassaemia and other haemoglobin variants, which can make the result unreliable
  • Kidney failure, liver disease, recent bleeding or a blood transfusion, and some medicines
  • Pregnancy

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?

No, not for the HbA1c itself. Your booking shows the exact instruction if other tests on the same sample need fasting.

What does HbA1c tell me that a sugar test does not?

A sugar test shows your glucose at one moment. HbA1c shows your average over the past two to three months.

Can HbA1c diagnose diabetes?

It can help diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, but your doctor decides, often with a repeat test. It is not used for type 1 or gestational diabetes.

Can anaemia change my HbA1c result?

Yes. Anaemia, thalassaemia and other haemoglobin variants can make HbA1c unreliable. Tell your doctor if you have any of them.

Can I book an HbA1c test at home in Raipur?

Yes. A HealthMark phlebotomist collects the sample at your address anywhere we serve in Raipur. You can also visit our lab in Shankar Nagar.
